Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization Interdisciplinary Paper Award

The Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization offers an award for the best interdisciplinary research paper on a topic related to aging by a GSA student member. Some examples might include how the biological aspects of aging are related to the social consequences of aging; using a theoretical perspective such as life course theory to explain various outcomes of communication and aging; or how public policy affects clinical, biological or psychological aspects of aging. Papers may be empirical or theoretical.

Open Submission Period

Summer 2024

Requirements

  • Applicants must be a Student or Transitional member of GSA.
  • Applicants must submit an abstract for the Annual Scientific Meeting.
    • The abstract must be accepted for the meeting.
    • The student must present at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Once accepted, the applicant must submit an article-length manuscript to compete for the award.
    • The manuscript must identify the institution with which the student is affiliated.
    • If the manuscript was co-authored, the submission must include a statement from any additional authors verifying that the work primarily the applicant’s work.

Nature of Award
The recipient receives $250, a certificate, and is recognized at the ESPO Business Meeting and Breakfast at the Annual Scientific Meeting.

Self Nomination Process

In order to apply for the ESPO Interdisciplinary Paper Award, upload two copies of your paper (one blind for review, one not), abstract control ID number, and a statement from co-authors. 


Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization Poster Award

The Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization (ESPO) offers five Poster Awards. The five recipients will be presented with a framed certificate.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be a Student or Transitional member of GSA.
  • Applicants must submit an abstract for the Annual Scientific Meeting.
    • The abstract must be accepted for the conference.
    • The student must present at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Once accepted, the applicant must submit a PDF or PowerPoint version of their poster.
    • If the poster was co-authored, the submission must include a statement from any additional authors verifying that the work primarily the applicant’s work.

Nature of Award
The five recipients each a receive a certificate, and are recognized at the ESPO Business Meeting and Breakfast at the Annual Scientific Meeting.

In order to apply for the ESPO Poster Award, upload two copies of your poster (one for blind review, one not), abstract control ID number, and co-author statement(s). 


Douglas Holmes Emerging Scholar Paper Award

Douglas Holmes

The Douglas Holmes Emerging Scholar Paper Award, sponsored by the RESQCARE Interest Group, honors Dr. Douglas Holmes, a noted psychologist who dedicated his life’s work to improving the lives of older adults.

The Douglas Holmes Emerging Scholar Paper Award recognizes research with potential to improve quality of life and/or quality of care in long-term care and is intended to encourage and support innovative and promising research across long-term care settings (i.e., nursing home, hospice, assisted living, adult day, or home and community based care). The award will be presented to the author(s) of the winning paper at GSA’s Annual Scientific Meeting at the RESQCARE Interest Group Meeting.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be a Student or Transitional member of GSA.
  • Eligibility is limited to those who are no more than 5 years post doctorate by the final submission deadline.
  • Applicants must submit an abstract for the GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • The abstract must be accepted for the meeting.
  • The student must present at GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Once accepted, applicants must submit a paper from the accepted abstract by the deadline.
  • The winning paper will be selected by a combined ESPO and RESQCARE review panel.
  • The winner(s) will be expected to give a short synopsis of their paper at the RESQCARE Interest Group Meeting at the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • The paper must…
    • be original and not yet published or copyrighted by a journal, book, or other form of publication.
    • be innovative, and push the envelope of current conceptualization.
    • be approximately 20 pages in length using APA style guidelines.
    • be of sufficient quality to be considered for publication in book chapter or peer-reviewed journal.
    • If the manuscript was co-authored, the submission must include a statement from all additional authors verifying that the work was primarily the applicant's.

Note: If the same paper is submitted and qualifies for more than one GSA award, only the Douglas Holmes Emerging Scholar Paper Award will be awarded.

Nature of the Award
The award carries a $500 cash prize. The award will be presented to the author(s) of the winning paper at the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting during the RESQCARE Interest Group Meeting.

Minority Issues in Gerontology Advisory Panel Student Poster Award

The Minority Issues in Gerontology Committee offers a Poster Award to recognize GSA ESPO members from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups for original and innovative research.

Open Submission Period

Summer 2024

Requirements
The applicant must be:

  • A Student or Transitional member without a doctoral degree at the time of abstract submission.
  • A member of an underrepresented race group (Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Pacific Islander, Asian).
  • The first author of the submitted work.

The applicant must:

  • Submit and have his/her abstract accepted for the Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Present at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Submit a PowerPoint or PDF version of their poster (2 copies - one blinded).
  • Include a statement from a mentor or advisor verifying that  the work is primarily the student's.

  • Originality
  • Theoretical framework and rationale
  • Methods
  • Discussion
  • Clarity

Nature of Award
The recipients each a receive a certificate, and will be recognized at the Minority Issues in Gerontology Award Presentation and Reception at the Annual Scientific Meeting.

Student Travel Awards

The travel stipends below are available for ESPO (student/transitional) members with active memberhsip. 

Carol A. Schutz Travel Award

Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization (ESPO) student members are eligible for a chance to win a Carol A. Schutz Travel Award. The stipend is to help defray the cost attending GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting. The recipients of the Carol A. Schutz Student Travel Stipends are chosen by lottery. In order to be eligible, one must fulfill all of the requirements and instructions for submission outlined below.

TJ McCallum Memorial Student Travel Award

GSA student members with a focus on caregiving or technology and aging are eligible for a chance to win this award that offers a stipend towards attending GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting. In order to be eligible, one must fulfill all of the requirements and instructions for submission outlined below.

  • Must be a current Student or Transitional member and have an updated GSA Connect Profile.
  • Must have an accepted paper, poster, or symposium paper with a focus on caregiving or technology and aging for the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting

In order to apply for the TJ McCallum Award, upload two copies of your paper/poster (one blind for review, one not), abstract control ID number, and a statement from co-authors. 

James McKenney Student Travel Award

James McKenney was a Mainer, born in Maine, resided there for most of his life and died in his home February 2015. With no formal advanced education, Jim was recognized for building the first super insulated home, a self-taught project in engineering. Jim highly valued education. When his friend, Marilyn R. Gugliucci, PhD, was serving as AGHE president 2008-2010, Jim established a planned giving gift for AGHE – 20% of his estate would be donated upon his death for advancing student education on aging.

Purpose of the Award

The James McKenney Student Travel Award provides travel funds for students to attend the AGHE programing at the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting. Award recipients also receive other benefits incluing complimentary meeting registration and a one-year GSA membership. Approximately 10 students will be selected to receive this award each year.

Submission Period

Summer 2024

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be a US or internationally matriculated student (undergraduate through post-doctoral training) interested in gerontology/geriatrics – the field of aging (matriculation defined as being enrolled as of September for either a semester or the full academic year of the year of the Travel Award).
  • AGHE membership status is not required although applications from students at AGHE member institutions or who have selected AGHE as their primary membership group are encouraged.
  • If selected, an applicant must attend at least 2 days of the GSA Annual Meeting with mandatory attendance at the AGHE Business Meeting and ESPO Presidential Symposium. Attending mentoring sessions is encouraged.
  • Award recipients will be recognized at the AGHE Business Meeting.
  • At the close of the GSA Annual Meeting, awardees will be required to:
    • Complete a 50-100 word Post Annual Meeting Statement of Learning outlining what the most significant learning experience was from attending the Annual Meeting. This statement will be published in the AGHExchange newsletter.
    • Post in the AGHE Connect Community to introduce themselves and share about their area of study.

  • An updated headshot for use in marketing materials if selected

Nature of the Award

An awardee receives funding which covers:

  1. One year of GSA membership
  2. Pre-paid student registration for the Annual Meeting
  3. Pre-paid half day pre-conference workshop at the Annual Meeting
  4. Pre-paid ticket for the AGHE Business Meeting Breakfast
  5. A travel stipend paid after the Annual Meeting to offset travel, lodging, and/or meals expenses.

Behavioral and Social Sciences Student Travel and Engagement Stipend

Active Student or Transitional members within the Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS) Section are eligible for a chance to win a BSS Travel Award. This award offers a stipend towards attending GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting. In order to be eligible, one must fulfill all of the requirements and instructions for submission outlined below.

  • Must be a current, active Student or Transitional member of the BSS Section and have an updated GSA Connect Profile.
  • Must attend the Behavioral and Social Sciences Business Meeting, date/time TBD.
  • Must have an accepted abstract for the 2021 GSA Annual Scientific Meeting. 

Health Sciences Travel Student Travel Award

Student or Transitional members within the Health Sciences (HS) Section are eligible for a chance to win a HS Travel Award. This award offers a stipend towards attending GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting. The recipients of the HS Travel Award are chosen by lottery. In order to be eligible, one must fulfill all of the requirements and instructions for submission outlined below.

  • Must attend the Health Sciences Business Meeting, date/time TBD. 

Social Research, Policy, and Practice Student Travel and Engagement Stipend

Student or Transitional members within the Social Research, Policy, and Practice (SRPP) Section are eligible for a chance to win SRPP Travel Award. This award offers a stipend towards attending GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting. The recipients of the SRPP Travel Award are chosen by lottery. In order to be eligible, one must fulfill all of the requirements and instructions for submission outlined below.
